Bio: Cyndi Laurin, PhD is the author of bestselling Catch! (Berrett-Koehler, 2005) and The Rudolph Factor (John Wiley, 2009). Cyndi’s previous experience includes 10 years as an Assistant Professor in the College of Business, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, specializing in process and performance excellence. Rod Oram

Presentation: Radical is the new normal

Bio: Rod Oram has more than 30 years’ experience as an international business journalist. He has worked for various publications in Europe and North America, including the Financial Times of London. Rod and his family emigrated from the UK to New Zealand in 1997. He is currently a columnist for the Sunday Star-Times; a regular broadcaster on radio and television; and a frequent public speaker on business, economics, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship, in both NZ and global contexts.

For more than a decade, Rod has been helping fast-growing New Zealand companies through his involvement with The ICEHOUSE, the entrepreneurship centre at the University of Auckland’s Business School.

Penguin published in 2007 his book on the New Zealand economy, Reinventing Paradise.

Chee Wei Kwan

Presentation: Leadership Practices and Paradoxes: what can we learn from Asia?

Bio: Chee Wei was invited by the Singapore government to set up the Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI) as Executive Director in February 2010, www.hcli.org. HCLI strives to provide insights and customized leadership and human capital solutions for leaders operating across Asia. Chee Wei oversees the overall management of HCLI, with a focus on charting HCLI’s strategic direction, research agenda and building partnerships. Chee Wei is also the lead facilitator for a number of flagship senior executive development programs. Prior to that, Chee Wei spent three years in senior HR leadership roles with large family-owned Asian conglomerates. Between 1997 and 2007, he gained his leadership and HR consulting experience with Watson Wyatt (now Towers Watson) and SHL. Chee Wei was the Managing Director for South East Asia at SHL till 2001. He then joined Watson Wyatt and rose to the role of Regional Director for the Human Capital Group (Asia Pacific), working extensively with public and private sector clients across Asia till 2007. Chee Wei started his career in the Singapore Ministry of Defence in 1988 as an organizational psychologist. Chee Wei has a Bachelor of Science (Psychology) from Leeds University (UK) and an MBA from the University of Leicester (UK).

Charles Aubrey

Presentation: Best Practices in Strategic Planning Drive Business Capability and Payoff on the Bottom Line!

Bio: Charles Aubrey is Vice President Quality and Performance Excellence and a Master Black Belt at Anderson Pharmaceutical Packaging a subsidiary of Fortune 500 AmerisourceBergen Corporation. He was President and now Chairman of the Asia Pacific Quality Organization. Charles is an Academician and Vice President of the International Academy for Quality.

He formerly held positions at Sears Roebuck & Co., American Express Corp., J.P. Morgan Chase and Bank America. Charles worked as Vice President Consulting with Dr. Juran at the Juran Institute. He was President and Chairman of the American Society for Quality and is also a Fellow of ASQ. He was Senior Examiner for the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program.

Chuck has received the Harrington/Ishikawa Medal, the Shanghai Magnolia Quality Award, the Yoshio Kondo Research Medal and the Lancaster Medal. He is an Honorary Member of the Argentine Quality Association and the Philippine Society for Quality.

He has authored and co-authored eight books on Performance Excellence. He has published over 100 articles in English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese and Arabic.

Sheryl Boxall

Presentation: Foresight-led Strategy and Innovation

Bio: Sheryl has been with the New Zealand Defence Force for the last seven years. She has recently completed an exploratory paper on Innovation in and for Defence and a theoretical study that introduces a way to design Foresight-led Strategy. Together they underpin the recently developed Foresight and Innovation Programme.

As change is the only predictable thing about the future, Sheryl is using a range of inclusive and participatory foresight methods to inquire into potential change. The goal is to increase strategic awareness, build resilience to shocks and surprises and garner commitment to action. The aim of the programme is to discover insight of the future and create innovative solutions to help prepare the Defence Force to meet the future security needs of New Zealanders.

Sheryl holds a MA from the University of Canterbury, where she considered developments in security theory and the effectiveness of the security institutions of the Pacific Islands Forum.

Helen Burt

Presentation: Creating an Iconic Customer Experience

Bio: Helen has been with Vero Insurance for 16 years in senior roles including marketing, strategic planning, business excellence and strategic customer management. During this time she championed Vero’s business excellence journey over ten years which culminated in Vero achieving the NZ Business Excellence Foundation Gold Award in 2008.

Prior to joining the insurance industry her professional career spanned a number of industries including financial services, banking and international marketing. Across all of these organisations she came to appreciate that understanding customers want and needs and delivering a value proposition that meets their needs is at the core of any organisations success.

Helen’s focus is now on helping Vero achieve its strategic goal to create an Iconic Customer Experience . Her first step in achieving this was the development of the Vero Customer Framework, a bespoke framework based on an extensive review of international best practice. The core objective of the Framework is to deliver mutual value to Vero and its customers through linking all aspects of the organisation to the customer experience.

Art Daniels

Presentation: Putting Citizens First: Achieving Customer Focus and Lean Government

Bio: Art Daniels has over 40 years’ experience in managing and developing institutions and human resources in the Canadian public service. He is widely recognized as a leader in implementing public sector change initiatives and, in the course of executive appointments, has effected tangible improvements in workforce motivation, efficiency, productivity, client satisfaction, and cost-efficiency. He is a leader in public sector reform and a former Assistant Deputy Minister in the Ontario Government. He served as Assistant Deputy Minister, Ontario Public Service Excellence and Innovation Office, Centre for Leadership, Cabinet Office, and as Assistant Deputy Minister, Ontario Public Service Restructuring Secretariat, Centre for Leadership, Cabinet Office, 1997–2002. Mr. Daniels has been a Senior Manager at BearingPoint involved in major public service reform nationally and internationally with projects in Qatar, Egypt, Ireland, Jordan and Jamaica. Nationally he has worked on the federal governments Modernizing Service for Canadians initiative as well as projects with Service Ontario.

Mr. Daniels contributions have been recognized through awards such as the Lieutenant Governor General Award for excellence in the Public Service and the Amethyst Award for Leadership in Innovation. Most recently he was awarded the first Ralph Hientzman Award for leadership in citizen-centred government.

Robert C. Camp

Presentation: Best Practice Benchmarking for Global Competitiveness and Cooperation

Bio: Robert Camp is a leading authority on benchmarking and its use to obtain best practice knowledge and superior performance. Dr. Camp’s business career includes DuPont, Mobil Oil, and 23 years with Xerox Corporation.
While at Xerox, he created benchmarking programs and led large-scale benchmarking investigations. Camp has presented the Xerox benchmarking experience at major events in 29 countries throughout Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa, and the Americas.

David Parmenter

Presentation: Avoiding the pitfalls of performance measurement through using winning KPIs.

Bio: David Parmenter, B.Com, FCA is an international presenter who is known for his thought provoking and lively sessions, which have led to substantial change in many organisations across the twenty countries he has visited. He has written six books with John Wiley & Sons Inc with titles ranging from “Winning CFOs: Implementing and Applying Better Practices” , “The Leading-edge Manager’s Guide to Success – strategies and better practices” to his best seller “Key Performance Indicators – developing, implementing and using winning KPIs” which is now in its second edition.

His work with KPIs has been endorsed internationally by many of his peers. His new book “Key Performance Indicators for Government and Non Profit Agencies” brings a breath of fresh air to the art of crafting and implementing performance metrics. Chris Curtin

Bio: Chris Curtin has been the Chief Executive of AA Insurance Limited since shortly after its launch as a new business in 1994. He has worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years having commenced his career with GIO Australia in Sydney, Australia.
AA Insurance is a Joint Venture between the Suncorp Group and the New Zealand Automobile Association. Chris is responsible for managing the company’s growth, profitability and organisational reputation. Since its inception and launch AA Insurance has grown significantly and is now one of New Zealand’s leading direct personal insurance companies with over 550 employees.
AA Insurance has been a finalist in the Kenexa Best Workplaces Awards for four consecutive years and was awarded overall Best Workplace and Best Large Workplace in 2011. Rob Matthews

Presentation: I’m not blind – its just that I can’t see

Bio: Rob Matthews’ insights into how to succeed in the face of the greatest challenges are nothing short of inspirational. He believes it’s not that he’s blind; it’s just that he can’t see.
Rob is one of the most inspiring individuals you could ever meet. This totally blind athlete has set 22 World records on the running track. He has won 29 international Gold medals for Great Britain, including 8 Golds over 7 Paralympic Games. Rob has been awarded with the MBE by the Queen for Services to Sport for the Disabled. He is the fastest blind man in the world.
He has also won 1 silver and 2 bronze medals for New Zealand in the triathlon and Tandem Cycling. Rob competed in his second World Triathlon Championships in Auckland in October and has just returned from the Sacramento Marathon.
Rob Matthews has been totally blind since the age of 20 due to inheriting an eye condition from his father called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). He has not let this stop him achieving success beyond most people’s wildest dreams. Rob has skied cross-country, cycled many thousands of kilometers, driven a racing car and plays golf, football and cricket.
His next goal is to compete in the Marathon des Sables, a 251km run in 6 days through the Sahara Desert. He has also set his sights on competing in the Polar Challenge which is a 650km ski/walk from Canada to the North Pole.

Professor Robert E. Cole

Presentation: Learning From Crisis: Toyota’s Quality Epiphany

Bio: Professor Cole is Emeritus Professor at the Haas School of Business and Dept. of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a long term researcher on Japan with a particular focus on quality improvement, innovation and organizational change. He has written extensively on the Japanese and U.S. auto industries and on the prospect for high tech renewal in Japan (Recovering from Success: Innovation and Technology Management in Japan, Oxford University Press: 2006). His most recent publication is ‘What Really Happened at Toyota?” Sloan Management Review, 2011. His present research focuses on Challenges for the Japanese Software Industry. Jim Harrington

Presentation: Streamlined Process Improvement

Bio: Dr. H. James Harrington, (born 1929) is an international performance improvement guru and business man. Over his long career he has authored over 35 books and developed many concepts; some of the more important ones are: Poor-Quality Cost, Total Improvement Management and Business Process Improvement.

At the World Business Capability Congress he will be giving a special Keynote Webinar, from his home in the United States, on Streamlined Process Improvement. Harrington is past President and Chairman of American Society for Quality and the International Academy for Quality, is CEO of the Walter L. Hurd Foundation and the Harrington Institute.

He is also a lifetime Honorary Chairman of the Asian Pacific Quality Organization. He was named Professional of the Year in 2010 and he was given the title of “The Global Leader in Performance Improvement Initiatives” in 2010 by the Australian Quality Association. He has been given many awards for his activities and he has had four awards named after him.

ProfessorPeter Hines

Presentation: Moving from Process Excellence to a Sustainable Lean Business System

Bio: Professor Peter Hines, is the Co-Founder of the Lean Enterprise Research Centre at Cardiff Business School. He holds a BA/MA from Cambridge University and an MBA and PhD from the Cardiff University. Peter followed a successful career in distribution and manufacturing industry before joining Cardiff Business School in 1992.

He has undertaken extensive research into Lean Thinking and Supply Chain Management and pioneered a number of key concepts, widely applied in Europe and Australia, including: Supplier Associations, Value Stream Mapping and the Lean Business System. He has written several books including “Creating World Class Suppliers”, “The Lean Enterprise”, “Value Stream Management” and “Staying Lean” first published in 2008 which won a Shingo Research and Professional Publication Prize Recipient for 2009.

Peter is Chairman of S A Partners, a specialist consultancy organisation operating in the UK, Ireland and Australia.

In 2012 Peter also launched a new portal www.LeanBusinessSystem.com to help his 60,000 LinkedIn group members to be able to learn, share and grow faster on their respective lean journeys.

Peter also continues his academic links with his Adjunct Professorship at the University of South Australia and associate role at LERC.

Holger Kohl

Presentation: Innovation and Intellectual Capital Management to support a sustainable corporate development

Bio: Dr. Holger Kohl is Vice-Director of the Division Corporate Management at Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK), Berlin/Germany and Head of the Department Business Excellence Methods as well as of Information Centre Benchmarking (ICB). He studied Business Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin and at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and finished his studies with the degree of a Dipl.-Ing. 1999 Dr. Kohl joined the Division Corporate Management at Fraunhofer IPK as Senior Researcher. Since then he has initiated and conducted several national and international Innovation Management, Intellectual Capital Management, Benchmarking and Business Process Reengineering Projects and was responsible for their realisation. Beside projects all over Europe, Dr. Kohl managed large scale projects in Brazil, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Egypt, etc.
His primary research interests are in the area of Sustainable Manufacturing, Intellectual Capital Management, National Innovation Systems, Benchmarking, and Business Process Reengineering in both the public and private sector as well as in the industry and service sector.

Barry Coleman

Presentation: The Key Ingredients for Success – Doric Group Holdings

Bio: Barry Coleman was an early adopter of Quality and Business Excellence principles and practices in Australia. He was a foundation director of the Total Quality Management Institute in 1986 and he has been involved with the Australian Business Excellence Awards since they were launched in October 1987.

Barry was previously the CEO of the Australian Quality Council which managed the Awards. They are now owned and managed by SAI Global.

Barry is a lead evaluator for the Awards and is a member of the judging panel. Over the years he has helped many countries develop their national Business Excellence Awards process.

Barry has developed a rare range of skills through his hands on experience and leadership with the implementation of Business Excellence Strategies in virtually every market sector.

Tony Stallinger

Presentation: The Key Ingredients for Success – Hutt City Council, New Zealand

Bio: Tony Stallinger has been Chief Executive of Hutt City Council since 2007. This followed previous positions with the Council having responsibility for Finance, Human Resources, Information Services and Business Excellence. Prior to working at Hutt City Council, Tony held finance based roles with Bank of New Zealand and KPMG.

Hutt City Council has a diverse range of responsibilities from regulatory enforcement, community services and core infrastructure. All services are delivered under a common purpose to “Work as a team with our communities and partners, to create a better city and stronger community”. Tony and others working at the Council take pride in making a positive difference to the lives of people in Hutt City.

The Council has strived for business excellence consistently for many years, with a particular focus on financial management and customer service. Tan Siong Thye

Presentation: The Key Ingredients for Success – The Subordinate Courts of Singapore

Bio: Tan Siong Thye is the Chief District Judge of Singapore. He is in-charge of the Subordinate Courts which deal with more than 95% of cases in the CityState. He is an experienced change agent. He re-organised and introduced numerous reforms and initiatives to improve court services and the administration of justice. He also changed the ethos of Subordinate Courts from court centric to service centric. The Subordinate Courts of Singapore won the coveted Singapore Quality Award 2011 with Special Commendation (SQA SC), an award which represents the pinnacle of business excellence in Singapore.

He has served the Singapore Legal Service for more than 30 years with extensive leadership, legal and management experience. He obtained Masters in Law (with Merit) from the University College of London under the legal service post graduate scholarship.

He was a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Colonel (reservist) and distinguished himself in various command appointments. He received several awards and accolades including the Best SAF National Service Man of the Year Award and a National Day Commendation Medal. Presently he is also a member of the Military Court of Appeal. He was awarded the Public Administration (Gold) in 2003 and the Public Administration (Gold Bar) in 2011 for his invaluable contributions.

Business Excellence Award Administrators Panel Discussion

David Sikorski

Presentation: The Impact of Australia’s Business Excellence Framework on “Driving Excellence> Innovation>Productivity> Export Growth”.

Bio: David Sikorski has spent his working career assisting organisations in improving the way they operate. David has been involved with the Australian Business Excellence Framework (ABEF) since its beginning and focuses on influencing leaders to change their thinking about their approach towards their organisation.

David works as the Practice Leader with SAI Global who are the custodians of the ABEF and utilises this model to develop client capability and assist them in achieving sustainable organisational performance. For the past decade David has facilitated the evaluation process of the Australian Business Excellence Awards, which have been celebrating business success in Australia for twenty five years as Australia’s premier business award program.

David is an experienced evaluator and in recent years has led the Australian Business Excellence Awards Panel of Review and assisted in training the Awards evaluators each year prior to the evaluation process. David established the ‘Graduate Certificate in Business Excellence Evaluation’ which has become a very popular qualification for improvement practioniers.

Freddy Soon

Presentation: The Impact of Singapore’s Business Excellence Framework on “Driving Excellence> Innovation>Productivity> Export Growth”.

Bio: Freddy SOON is Special Advisor, CEO Office of Hyflux Limited, one of the world’s fully-integrated water solutions company and leader in Seawater Reverse Osmosis desalination. As Advisor, Freddy focuses on Corporate Social Responsibility and Productivity. Prior to this, he was Senior Vice President for Group Communications & Relations.

Freddy has over 35 years experience in productivity and competitiveness policy; quality assurance & standardisation; business excellence & Total Quality Management. Prior to joining Hyflux, he was Deputy Chief Executive of the Standards, Productivity & Innovation Board, where he introduced the Singapore Quality Award (SQA) in 1994 and saw through its implementation and evolution to what it is today. Freddy chaired the SQA Management Committee for the past 17 years, by which time Singapore has some 44 SQA winners and 470 Spore Quality Class (SQC) recipients, impacting some 400,000 members of the workforce. Freddy is still an active member of the SQA Governing Council.

In 1995, Freddy received the APO Regional Award for his contributions to productivity and was made a Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Science. In 2011, he was conferred the Public Service Star for his voluntary contributions to the national health programme. Freddy is a member of the Board of Governors, Temasek Polytechnic and Vice President, Singapore Water Association.

Mike Watson

Bio: Mike Watson is the Chief Executive Officer of the New Zealand Business Excellence Foundation. The Foundation is recognised as the national leader in developing, promoting and recognising organisational excellence and is committed to providing New Zealand organisations with services and resources that support their performance improvement efforts.

Previously Group Strategic Development manager for the Royal & SunAlliance Insurance Group, Mike’s career has spanned over 20 years during which time he consulted both Internationally and locally on Organisational Development, Strategic & Operational Planning, Business Improvement, Performance Management, Customer Relationship Management and Project Management.

Mike is an experienced National evaluator and team leader, and has extensive experience in organisational assessment and implementing the US Baldrige Business Excellence framework. Mike has personally provided consulting advice and training to many of NZ’s largest Corporates and also numerous organizations in both the public and private sector. Mike also lectures at Masters level on Quality Management.

Mike is a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management, a Senior Associate of the Australian & NZ Institute of Insurance and Finance, a member of the Institute of Directors and a Certified Company Director. Mike also sits on the Capability NZ Board a Government funded public / private sector partnership whose focus is to build capability in NZ businesses.

Holger Kohl

Presentation: The future of benchmarking – Fraunhofer IPK’s viewpoint

Bio: Dr. Holger Kohl is Vice-Director of the Division Corporate Management at Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK), Berlin/Germany and Head of the Department Business Excellence Methods as well as of Information Centre Benchmarking (ICB). He studied Business Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin and at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and finished his studies with the degree of a Dipl.-Ing. 1999 Dr. Kohl joined the Division Corporate Management at Fraunhofer IPK as Senior Researcher. Since then he has initiated and conducted several national and international Innovation Management, Intellectual Capital Management, Benchmarking and Business Process Reengineering Projects and was responsible for their realisation. Beside projects all over Europe, Dr. Kohl managed large scale projects in Brazil, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Egypt, etc.
His primary research interests are in the area of Sustainable Manufacturing, Intellectual Capital Management, National Innovation Systems, Benchmarking, and Business Process Reengineering in both the public and private sector as well as in the industry and service sector.

Robin Mann

Organisation: Centre for Organisational Excellence Research, New Zealand

Presentation: The future of benchmarking – COER’s viewpoint.

Bio: Dr Robin Mann is the Head of the Centre for Organisational Excellence Research, New Zealand, www.coer.org.nz, Chairman of the Global Benchmarking Network, www.globalbenchmarking.org, Advisory Board member at the Hamden Bin Mohammed e-University, Dubai www.hbmeu.ae and Co-Founder of BPIR.com Limited, www.bpir.com – a leading benchmarking website resource.  Robin’s experience includes managing the UK’s Food and Drinks Industry Benchmarking and Self-assessment Initiative (1995-1998), New Zealand Benchmarking Club (2000-2004), Sheikh SAQR Government Excellence Program, UAE (2005-2007), reviewing the Australian Business Excellence Framework (2006), chief expert for APO’s project on business excellence in Asia (2009-2011) and the developer of the TRADE best practice benchmarking methodology. Robin worked in Edinburgh (1992-1995) for Burton’s Biscuits as a process improvement manager and obtained his PhD in TQM at Liverpool University in 1992. Robin undertakes consultancy on business excellence and benchmarking all over the world. Robin was awarded the Harrington/Ishikawa Medal in 2011 for contributions to the advancement of quality in the Asia Pacific region.

Oliver Riebartsch

Bio: Mr. Oliver Riebartsch is Head of the Information Centre Benchmarking at Fraunhofer IPK, Berlin/Germany. He studied Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration at the RWTH Aachen University. In 2010, Mr. Riebartsch joined the Division of Corporate Man-agement at Fraunhofer IPK as a senior researcher. Since then, he was involved in several national and international projects in the public and private sector. His international project experiences include the realization of projects in the areas of Benchmarking, Strategic Plan-ning, Performance Management and Innovation Management in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, China, Russia, UAE, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Bruce Searles

Bio: Bruce Searles is the Managing Partner of Benchmarking Partnerships, Australia, and Director Business Development, Global Benchmarking Network. He has delivered seminars, training and international presentations on benchmarking and leadership best practices in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hungary, the Philippines, USA, Nepal, Seoul, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Fiji, Dubai, Moscow, Canada, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Taipei. He has led the strategic relationship and benchmarking projects with the Asian Productivity Organisation, Singapore Productivity Association and SPRING Singapore, FTPI in Thailand, Development Academy of the Philippines, Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji (TPAF), MPC Malaysia, National Qualiy Institute in Canada and the APQC in the USA. Bruce is assisting many public and private organisations and peak bodies to drive sustainable improvement from leadership of benchmarking projects and strategic business and action planning initiatives. Bruce directly assisted MPC Malaysia, DAP in the Phillipines, TPAF Fiji, FTPI Thailand, Singapore Productivity Association and the APO across Asia to develop and run their first consortium benchmarking projects and training. Together with his colleague Anton Benc, Bruce has developed the 9 Pillars for vastly improved, sustainable buisness results and is now helping organisations and industries to deploy the 9 Pillars through training and facilitation.
